Situation

The Norwegian company Unitor was contracted to provide the air conditioning and fire damper systems for 2 Royal Caribbean cruise liners. The ship is divided into 9 fire zones. If a fire occurs in one zone, the other fire zones on the ship are designed to be isolated from the fire. This means that the control and monitoring systems in each must also be able to operate in isolation while being able to be monitored centrally from the engine room and the bridge.

Solution

During the building and delivery of the ships, Unitor installed a SAIA PLC control network with a SAIA PLC and a Measuresoft Scada system in each fire zone. The SAIA PLCs were connected on a dual 485 network while the Measuresoft Scada systems operated over a dual redundant Windows networks. The Measuresoft Scada systems were run on embedded systems with no permanent monitors. These systems in turn are monitored via a PC network in the engine control room and on the bridge using a Measuresoft developed graphical interface as shown below. The interface allows each room on the ship to be monitored using a graphical navigation facility. The solution also provides alarm monitoring and alarm logging. Measuresoft staff worked in the shipyards and during the sea trials on the ships to ensure that the solution was delivered on time.

Benefits

The system graphical interface is highly configurable.

The system is highly reliable with the fire zone system not having to be rebooted for many years.

The graphical interface has set a standard in the shipping industry for presentation and screen navigation.

The system is easily upgradeable to new version of Windows and new PC hardware as was the case in the refurbishment of the ships in 2005.
