Company Profile
ESB is the leading provider of electricity in Ireland. ESB has been involved in power generation
since the late 1920's. Now the company is at the leading edge of power generation with its newest
plants, including the latest Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plants. The Aghada Power Plant,
located in County Cork, is gas fuelled and has a 525 Megawatts capacity.
Situation
ESB had a requirement for a high-speed Governor Disturbance Monitoring System that would provide
real-time information to engineers and also provide historical data for root cause analysis of
outages, spikes and other disturbances.

Solution
Measuresoft, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, proposed and installed a Disturbance Monitor solution
based on its ScadaPro product running on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform. The system was configured
to acquire data from a ComputerBoards high speed data acquisition card with 64 single ended analog
inputs and 32 bits of digital I/O. Signal conditioning modules were used along with 1500Vrms isolation.
The system was housed in a portable steel enclosure.
ESB now has a monitoring system that:
Event based data logging to capture any disturbance and minimize data storage requirements
ScadaPro's Pre, During and Post event data logging functionality is used to provide detailed analysis and reporting
ScadaPro's real-time and historical Trending package allows an operator zoom into an area of interest and export that data to a standard Microsoft Excel report format.
Benefits
-
ESB now have a solution that provides traceability for disturbances on the governor system. This data is used to enhance the overall performance of the plant and helps to ensure continuity of output. -
Leveraging the Microsoft platform provides a solution that is accessible throughout the corporate network
-
The use of open standards such as OPC allows the system to be connected to OIS systems. -
Operator familiarity with the Windows user interface reduces training costs.
